Howard J. Meyer, Jr. was admitted to the Minnesota Bar in 1986 and Alaska Bar in 1988. He received his Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from the University of North Dakota in 1985, where he was a member of the North Dakota Law Review. Mr. Meyer also studied maritime and international law at the University of Oslo, Norway. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree with Departmental Honors in Anthropology in 1982 from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Mr. Meyer's practice is primarily focused on representing victims of personal injury and families in cases involving wrongful death. Mr. Meyer also has considerable experience in maritime personal injury claims, claims involving aviation accidents, liquor liability, and other catastrophic loss such as traumatic brain injury, and cases involving paraplegia and quadriplegia that have significant issues of life care planning. He is a member of the Alaska Bar Association, American Association for Justice, Alaska Academy of Trial Lawyers, and has been admitted to practice before all Alaska and Minnesota state courts, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the District of Alaska and Minnesota.
Prior to his beginning work as a plaintiff's personal injury attorney, Mr. Meyer was an insurance defense attorney for approximately fifteen years representing both insurance companies and their insured. He has handled hundreds of cases involving almost every major automobile insurer doing business in Alaska, and as a result has a unique and valuable insight into how insurance companies defend accident claims. Mr. Meyer is now applying this knowledge to helping injured Alaskans.
Mr. Meyer has been involved in several precedent-setting cases, including: State Farm Mutual Insurance Co. v. Wilson, 199 P.3d 581 (Alaska 2008); and In Re SouthCentral Air Crash Litigation, 835 P.2d 1215 (Alaska 1992).
